East Coast REC Sabellaria spinosa in Haisborough, Hammond and Winterton
The East Coast Regional Environmental Characterisation (REC) Programme is a multidisciplinary investigation that has employed state of the art techniques to develop a broad understanding of the habitats and areas of archaeological interest over an extensive area of approximately 3,300 km2 of the seabed off East Anglia. The study was conducted over a three-year period and has been funded by the Marine Aggregate Levy Sustainability Fund. This dataset identifies specific areas of Sabellaria spinulosa Annex I biogenic reef within the Haisborough, Hammond and Winterton SAC. Funded/commissioned by Marine Environmental Protection Fund (MEPF) which is run by Cefas on behalf of Defra.

This map came from the East Coast Regional Environmental Characterisation Programme, and shows the specific areas of Sabellaria spinulosa Annex I biogenic reef within the Haisborough, Hammond and Winterton SAC identified in this survey. The data was taken from the Natural England Evidence Base where it was recorded using the EUNIS 07 format. This map was then formatted to meet the EMODnet Seabed Habitats Data Exchange Format (DEF) standards required for uploads to EMODnet by JNCC in August 2022.
The survey provided two maps related to this area - biota and acoustic. The August 2022 version only used the biota data, this was updated in December 2022 and both the biota and acoustic data were used for this dataset.
This is an internal collated evidence base that is used for Marine Protected Area (MPA) designation, monitoring and condition reporting. Point data is added cumulatively to the evidence base; polygonal data is 'stacked' using the MESH confidence score to ensure that only one polygonal record is present at any single location and that this record has the highest confidence score. This geoprocessing means that full raw datasets may not be included in the evidence base, and records that are included may be subject to clipping to facilitate other records from another raw dataset of a higher confidence score.
