The model represents the potential distribution of habitat areas of seagrass (eelgrass, Zostera marina) in an area in Nordøyane, Møre og Romsdal county, the West coast of Norway. Field data (35 seagrass presences, 560 absences) was collected in 2003. The model was run in 2006 and published in Bekkby et al. (2008). The five predictor variables used were depth, slope, “enclosedness”, wave exposure and current speed. The depth model (DTM) was developed at a spatial resolution of 10 m using the linear algorithm of the software Surfer (version 6.1, Bekkby et al., 2002), based on point data and contour intervals purchased from the Norwegian Mapping Authority. Slope was calculated from the DTM using the function available in ArcView 3.3. “Enclosedness” (Bekkby and Isæus, 2008), i.e. the degree to which an area is situated in an inlet or bay, was modelled at a spatial resolution of 10 m. Wave exposure was modelled, with a spatial resolution of 10 m, as an index using data on fetch (distance to nearest shore, island or coast), averaged wind speed and wind frequency (estimated as the amount of time that the wind came from one of 16 direction). Current speed was estimated by the numerical ocean model ROMS at a 100 m spatial resolution. The model (fivefold cvROC = 0.89) was developed using GAM analysis and AICc model selection, in the statistical program S-PLUS 2000. "Look up tables" and the program Grasp were used to transfer the predictions to ArcView GIS 3.3.
