The Manacles Intertidal Rock and Sediment Verification Survey 2013
The Manacles Marine Conservation Zone is a small site situated approximately 10km south of Falmouth on the south coast of Cornwall. The main features of this site are the outstanding subtidal rocky reef communities which grow on The Manacles themselves. The MCZ also encompasses the littoral rock and sediment features of the shore line which are the subject of this report.
Phase I and Phase II surveys of the littoral habitats were undertaken by Ecospan Environmental Ltd during the spring tides on the 5th of December 2013 and the 3rd of March 2014. These surveys were commissioned by Natural England and were designed to provide additional data on the extent and presence of certain features within the MCZ.

The original survey consisted of a Phase 1 survey and a Phase 2 survey. Phase I was intended to produce an accurate map of all habitat types and to target note any important features. Phase II used the information gathered in Phase I to acquire more detailed data and complete species lists for each habitat type. These were undertaken by Ecospan Environmental Ltd during the spring tides on the 5th of December 2013 and the 3rd of March 2014.
A total of nine rock habitat types were recorded and mapped in GIS within The Manacles MCZ; Eight high energy (EUNIS level three A1.1) and one moderate energy (EUNIS level 3 A1.2). A total of three littoral sediment habitat types were identified and mapped in GIS within the study area; one littoral coarse sediment (A2.1) and two littoral sand and muddy sand habitat types (A2.2).
The maps were translated from the JNCC Marine Habitat Classification v04.05 to EUNIS 2004 by Ecospan Environmental Ltd. in June 2014. The sediment map and rock map were then merged together to make one map (due to being from the same survey under the same GUI), formatted to meet the Data Exchange Format v4.1, and translated from JNCC Marine Habitat Classification v04.05 to EUNIS 2007-11 by JNCC in June 2024.- It was also translated into EUNIS 2022 (J:\Reference\Marine\Habitats\01_Individual_HabitatMapsfromSurvey\PUBLIC_HabitatMaps.gdb\GB100283_EUNIS_22) in August 2024.
