Habitat map of the coastal Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar) in the Italian waters

Ramsar areas are areas of Italian territory that meet the requirements of the international convention on wetlands of international importance, known as the Ramsar Convention. The Ramsar Convention (Presidential Decree No. 448 of March 13, 1976, and with subsequent Presidential Decree No. 184 of February 11, 1987), defines wetlands as marshes and swamps, peat bogs or basins, natural or artificial, permanent or temporary, with standing or flowing water, fresh, brackish, or salt, including expanses of sea water whose depth, during low tide, does not exceed six meters. Statement

This map derives from the Ramsar areas of Italian territory that meet the requirements of the International Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, known as the Ramsar Convention ( http://wms.pcn.minambiente.it/ogc?map=/ms_ogc/wfs/RAMSAR.map). Thus, for the purposes of EMODnet, only those areas “above spring high tide limit (or above mean water level in non-tidal waters) occupying coastal features and characterized by their proximity to the sea, including coastal dunes and wooded coastal dunes, beaches, and cliffs” (from EUNIS definition of “N: Coastal Habitats” in EUNIS v2022) are considered. In the original layer provided by the "Geoportale Nazionale" only the name of the sites is reported and the specific habitat types is not directly identified. Therefore, the habitats included in this map were deduced from the geographic name of the site, where possible, or by referencing the technical documentation for each wetland area
