Cartographie biomorphos├®dimentaire du golfe normano-breton (1987) au 1/25000
This biomorphosedimentary mapping of the Normandy-Brittany gulf has been drawn up according to the "carte biomorphos├®dimentaire de la zone intertidale au 1/25000, c├┤te Ouest du Cotentin et Baie du Mont Saint-Michel" published in 1987 in the form of 7 maps. These maps constitute a summary of the studies carried out by the group "Estrans et Zones humides" within the framework of the Integrated Regional Studies of the Normandy-Brittany gulf. This research work was conducted under the aegis of Ifremer, in cooperation with the Geomorphology Laboratory of the " Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes " of Dinard and the Botany Laboratory of Rennes University.
The prime feature of the map is the presentation of a morphosedimentary seabed through the main biosedimentary units which have been observed on the entire tidal zone, and this is supported by a multitude of field surveys.
These maps were digitized in 2005, as part of the REBENT programme, i.e. the surveying network for the benthic fauna and flora. These maps have been grouped together in digital form in one set of data. The original legend is transferred to the "ORIG_HAB" attribute data field. The harmonization with the EUNIS typology is in progress, as part of the REBENT and Interreg-MESH programmes.

Survey technique details: Resolution of data : Unknown Spatial accuracy of coordinates : Unknown Survey method comment : - Morphosedimentary seabed mapping : -> the 1/25000 IGN in the form of monochrome negatives was used as a base for planimetry and general lay-out. The tracing of the coastline and rocky outcrops was corrected and updated using recent aerial photos. -> Aerial photographies : Survey IPLI 82 at 1/20000 and additional data from 1983. Special mission IGN/EDF at 1/8000 (1982-1983), in colour and in infra-red (Central Cotentin zone). Survey IGN 1979 (FR 145-175), 1980 (F 80-165), F1980 (145-3200 C). -> Geological maps : Geological maps at 1/50000 from BRGM, completed by a former series at 1/80000. Outlining land contours near the coast and indicating formations and main uneven features on the rocky plateaux. -> Seabed sedimentology map : Bricquebec map at 1/100000 (1969). -> Bibliography : refer to Bibliography page 26-27 in the explanatory notes. - Mapping of the main biosedimentary units in the low and mid intertidal zone : The units were demarcated by simultaneously analysing morphosedimentary maps and aerial photos, and this was confirmed during field surveys. Sediment and fauna samples were taken from different biosedimentary units, and then analysed. The purpose of the field ssurveys was to determine the distribution of some species which have a special ecological interest. The characteristics of soft substrate populations have been extensively explored, the studies on hard-substrates only concerned the flora. Mapping of phanerogamic vegetation in the upper intertidal zone : Determination of phanerogamic units according to submersion by the tide or residual hygromorphy. Digitizing methodology (coordinated by IFREMER DEL/AO, B. Guillaumont / Chantal Croguennec) : several operations were necessary to get a digital information medium (from paper documents) : - Each paper map was scanned at a 400-dpi resolution, - The scanned files were georeferenced, using "GeoMedia Professionnel" software, version 5.0, - Digitizing was GeoMedia-based, using a large scale display (scale 10 times larger than the original document), - For each polygon, the original legend (ORIG_HAB) was indicated in an attribute data field. - The file resulting from the digitizing was converted into an Arcinfo coverage, in order to build and validate its topology, and then converted into a shapefile. The reference coastline used is the so-called "Ifremer-Shom" on scale 1/25000 (updated in 1995). The harmonization with the EUNIS typology is in progress, as part of the REBENT and Interreg-MESH programmes.
