The habitat data was originally collected as part of the 2002 survey of the Hanover Point to St Catherine's Point SSSI and Freshwater Bay, south coast of Isle of Wight. This was undertaken by RJH Herbert (BSc. PhD. CBiol) on behalf of English Nature and the habitats were originally classified using the Marine Habitats Classification v97.06. The data was then translated into Marine Habitats Classification v04.05 at an unspecified time, and further translated to EUNIS 07 by Natural England in 2015, and uploaded to the Natural England Evidence Base (Marine Habitats and Species Open Data - MHaBS).
This map was then formatted and standardised by JNCC to meet the Data Exchange Format v4.1 on Aug 2025.
