Mangrove Cover and Composition (Essential Ocean Variable) in European jurisdictional waters (2023)

This layer shows the current known extent and distribution of Mangroves in jurisdictional waters of EU Member States, the United Kingdom (UK) and Norway in the Caribbean Sea, collated by EMODnet Seabed Habitats in 2023. The purpose was to produce a data product that would provide the best compilation of evidence for the essential ocean variable (EOV) known as Mangrove cover and composition (sub-variable: Mangrove fringe width and area), as defined by the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS). Mangroves provide essential habitat and nursery areas for many marine fauna. This data product is new and will be updated with additional data as it becomes available.

Statement

This layer shows the current known extent and distribution of Mangroves in jurisdictional waters of EU Member States, the United Kingdom (UK) and Norway in the Caribbean Sea, collated by EMODnet Seabed Habitats in 2023.

The layer is comprised from two different sources: the coastal wetlands habitat maps from survey provided by EMODnet seabed habitats consortium partners, and the UNEP-WCMC Global Mangrove Watch (1996 - 2020) dataset. Only a subset of the UNEP-WCMC datasets were used in this product, namely in the areas of interest in the Caribbean Sea. The products were clipped to these areas and then combined with the EMODnet Seabed Habitats data. The attributes were amended to remove many fields that are redundant for this data layer e.g. taxonomic fields and areas. Information about the citation (renamed source) and the dataset IDs and habitat have been retained. Where overlaps in polygons occurred preference was given to the habitat maps from survey collated by EMODnet Seabed Habitats. At the time of creation only coastal wetlands datasets from Guadalupe and Martinique were available, but additional Caribbean datasets will be added during the next update. The attribute table contains information about the source of each polygon.
